Workday this Saturday July 23rd

we have a scheduled work day this Saturday at usual time of 9.30am start, we will be continuing along the stream side as we have been doing recently. Wheelbarrows, rakes, loppers, etc will be the tools of the day, waders or wetsuits may be applicable. The work done below the main spring last time was amazing.
However the weather is not looking too hot,(pardon the pun) so if in doubt Sat morning please give either John Rainbow 3322767 or myself Cherry 3322474 a call before 9.am by which time we will have made a decision as to whether we go ahead or not.
If we do, lunch will be homemade soup and buns again, BYO drinks please.

Please feel free to contact either of us for any questions.
Kind regards as always
Cherry Douglas

Special Thanks

(from Jerry Douglas)

A special thank you goes to Gary Coker, who provided a commercial
chipper machine free of charge, to enable us to clear a massive pile
of branches etc., that we had accumulated over the last couple of
workdays.
Gary has also said that he will join our Society as he felt
that the camaraderie on the day was great and whilst we all worked
hard we had fun at the same time. Welcome aboard Gary.

Others on the day cleared recently rediscovered tracks near the head Spring area, which has opened up the viewing of areas not seen for many years.
We are working over the winter months this year for the first time,
and instead of the usual BBQ we will be enjoying home made soups,
bread, buns and even Mulled wine just to warm us up of course.

Look forward to seeing everyone next workday.
Jerry

Loving Hamurana Springs

(From Heather Johnson)

We host a lot of international guests and encourage them to visit the
Hamurana Stream. Those who do just love the walk & peace.
Afternoon gives the best light on the stream.
Some guests then purchase a native tree which is planted in the Travellers’ Trees area of the walkway.

Heather,
Nicara Lodge

This Saturday Workday

(from Cherry Douglas, Treasurer)

Provided the weather is acceptable we will be having another “fun” day at the springs again this Saturday.
Meet in the carpark at 9.30 am, bring rakes, loppers, gloves, etc and we will continue along the main walking track opening up the vista.
Please feel free to join us for a light lunch afterwards.

If in doubt about the weather please give me a ring 07 3322474 on Saturday morning by 9.00 am by which time we should have an idea if we continue for this day.
If the weather is too bad we will cancel and proceed to the next agreed work day which will now be the 25th of June, as by a unanimous decision of the committee we have decided to carry on through the winter.

While I have been sending these communications out to everyone that has ever been involved with the societey over the years, we really need to know if you want to stay on the mailing list. If you do, may we respectfully request that you pay your subscriptions to the society (see also here ).
These funds are absolutely vital for purchasing plants, contributions towards fuel and the research for publication of history of the springs. At present working members are using their own tools and paying for their own fuel as we do not get any help for DoC in this area.

As our new year is due to start in June when we have our AGM, subs will start anew then.
The AGM date will be confirmed shortly but is tentatively down for 22nd June, subject to confirmation of venue.

Kind regards as always,
Cherry Douglas
Treasurer

Special Day

(by Herma)

Last Saturday was a special day for me, as “my tree” ( a present from HSIS) was planted near the head spring. It was at the end of the HSIS work morning, in bright sunshine after days of rain, which made it even more pleasant.

Here’s my Kowhai on the way!

And this is the place she will hopefully grow for years and years
38.01.56 S – 176.13.10 E to be exact 😉

On this photo you can hardly see her leaves against the background,
but the small image shows the delicacy of leaves and flowers of a Kowhai:

A fantastic barbeque in pleasant company afterwards made this into a day not to forget!

Workday 30 April

The next workday is this coming Saturday ( 30th April), when we will meet as usual at 9.30 a.m at the carpark for our health and safety briefing along with allocations of tasks for the session.
Everyone is welcome to attend and bring rakes, loppers, forks etc., as we will be continuing the track cleanup towards the Redwoods. We are also doing a special planting of a Kowhai Tree in honour of the work our webmaster has done and continues to do . A barbeque lunch will be held afterwards at 12.30pm.

We look forward to seeing you there to join in the fun.

Bird Choir

Some time ago I shot this little film with my photo camera while walking in the forest one early morning.
I uploaded it to my YouTube channel to share it with others.
Hear the birds singing, my favourite choir!

Gosh, I’m so proud of this website and proud to be the webmaster also. We’re only on line for just over a month and already on the first page of Google search results!
