Workday 25th February

Every morning we enjoy our walk in the Hamuarana Springs Reserve, together with our border collie Tim. Yesterday I brought my camera, as the first 2012 workday was in full swing.
And it certainly was!! HSIS volunteers everywhere…
This morning we very much enjoyed the results of cleaning the forest track, great work!!

First Workday 2012

Saturday February 25th is our first working day for the new year. Weather providing, we will be spraying rogue robinias and blackberry, under the guidance of our resident ticketed member, clearing the main track, maybe some clearing down by the dancing stands and along the Ynys Fraser walkway.
The tables and seats may need a bit of a clean, perhaps our young ones might be able to do this with a bucket and scrubbing brush.

Usual arrangement so meet in the carpark at 9.30 for H & S talk, registration and allocation of tasks. Lunch of course will follow, BYO and some contribution towards salads etc would be appreciated.

We also have two Travellers trees to plant (compliments of Nicara and Springwaters) so if we leave this to the last task for the day say 11.45am in the dedicated area, this should suit everyone we hope.

There have been contractors working on removing some of the willows – so we have finally had some help and they will continue to do so for a little while we believe. And for those who like fires, not this work day but the next we should have everything in place (permit/standbypump etc) to enable us to finally get rid of some of the rubbish.

If you are uncertain about the weather, JR2 and I will have liased in the morning and we should have made a decision by 9 - 9.15am, you can ring Cherry on 3322474.

Do not send email to me unless you use my home mailas I won’t be able to pick up unless it is work hours.
Hopefully it is fine, and we can start afresh, and see you there.

Kind regards as always

Photo Gift

The HSIS Committee wanted to give a Christmas present to our much loved and generous Patron, Ynys Fraser. It was decided that a group photo, enlarged, mounted, inscribed and framed would be a gift that would be appreciated and cherished by Ynys.
The group photo was taken at the Douglas’s after our final workday of the year on Dec. 3rd., and Melanie Reid handled all the detail from there. She even typed a full list of those in the photo to place on the back of the frame.
Jerry and Cherry Douglas and our President John Rainbow delivered the gift to Ynys on Dec. 23rd. She was delighted with the thought, and Jerry took some great photos to mark the occasion:

Our Sign is Back!

Many thanks to all at DOC, it is wonderful to see this new sign at the start of the Ynys Fraser Walkway back up in time for all the holiday visitors. Looks great.

Last 2011 Workday

The Society’s keen volunteers met at the Springs for the last work day of the year, last Sat. Dec. 3rd. 2011. While the weather was far from ideal, there was a fantastic turnout of willing helpers, who boxed on in the rain.

Some helped install 2 beautiful tables, crafted from the Redwood timber allocated to the Society, others went to work on a general clean up of the main track which looked just great, a Pohutukawa donated as part of the Traveller’s Trees scheme was planted up by the main spring.

And finally the time was used to do a complete check of the Predator Traps, with 2 more rats in varying degrees of decay(!) being collected.

An even larger group then turned up for the year end lunch at the Douglas’s. As everyone brought a plate to go with the Ham, there was a huge and delicious array of food, a feast even, followed by an amazing range of succulent desserts. Add to that the great Mulled Wine prepared by our resident expert Clarice, plus the BYO drinks, and a good time was had by all.
It was an ideal opportunity to take a group photo as well.
The President said some words of thanks to all the volunteers, who have put in another year of hard work in the Reserve.

Another Table ;-)

Hadn’t noticed Jerry’s huge picnic table yet, as it was raining very hard last time.
It was still raining this morning but the sight of this beauty was worth getting wet.

Seats and Tables !

Visitors to the Reserve will now notice the installation of several seats and 2 picnic tables + seats, scattered at strategic viewing points on or near the Main Track through the Redwoods and on the Ynys Fraser Walkway.

They have been beautifully built from the sawn Redwood timber allocated to the Society after trees were felled near the entrance to the Reserve before the new car park was built.
Two of our members, Paul Sampson and Jerry Douglas, have put in many hours of their own time to build the new ‘furniture’. As a consequence of their efforts, visitors will now be able to sit down or picnic in comfort in the beautiful surroundings.
The bench seats and tables just look stunning in that amazing environment and many visitors have already put them to use and made very positive comments.
They will be much photographed as they look great when dry and even better when wet with the layer of water resembling a very glossy varnish.

This Saturday Dec. 3rd. last 2011 Workday

This Saturday is the final work day for the year – all being well with the weather.
Please ring John Rainbow 3322767, or myself Cherry 3322474 – by 9am on Sat morning to check out the weather. Whilst it is saying showers, we think we should be Ok.

We will be doing a general cleanup along the Ynys Fraser Walkway, and installing the HUGE picnic table that Jerry has made.
Paul is well on the way (if not already finished) installing his massive number of seating and we are putting in his smaller picnic table on Sat as well. We may need a hand at home to get the big table on to the trailer, it will have to come in sections as it will be too heavy to handle otherwise.
We hope to give you all a relatively easy day so that you won’t be too tired to enjoy your extra special lunch to thank you all for your hard work this year.
As usual, BYO drink – and any salads that you may care to bring - I will supply the rest.
Thanking you all again
